Popular Obstetricians or Gynaecologists in Penang-Malaysia
I found that there are many obstetrics and gynaecologists around Penang, but not many from the public are aware of them. So, I wrote one article for the popular obstetrics around the northern region, or more specifically around Penang area. Hope it helps you guys. 1. Dr. Rosita Hj Ramli
Dr. Rosita is gynaecologist in Pearl Maternity Hospital in Penang. She is the one that established this hospital with her husband in 2006. If she can open up a maternity hospital, then her experience plus knowledge is vast. She is friendly, motherly and very patient. Together with her, her staff is very caring and helpful towards every patient in the hospital. She is also a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecology. She does not only treat mom-to-be’s but also helps for menopause, neonatal jaundice, vaccination for kids and adults, well women screening, Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUCD) insertion and removal, Implanon insertion or removal and gynaecological surgery. She also gives family planning advices. She also does part time consultation in Pantai Hospital, Penang. She is one of the few good muslimah gynaes’ in Penang.
2. Dr. Yeoh Chee Lim
Dr. Yeoh serves in Gleneagles Penang as an obstetrician (OB) and gynaecologist. As an OB, Dr. Yeoh believes in shared antenatal care and is always providing counselling and amniocentesis services to “at risk” women. On the other hand, as a gynae, Dr. Yeoh is able to offer services ranging from gynaecological endoscopy, including laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy, to assisted reproduction including In-Vitro-Fertilisation (IVF). She is very friendly and helpful. Most of the time, she will advise you to buy the medicines from the pharmacy as it’s cheaper to buy from there. You have to be early to visit her for an appointment. This is because her waiting time is very long. She has a lot of patients as she is a very good gynae.
3. Dr. Somaskandar Sivasuntharam
Dr Somas joined Gleneagles Penang as a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, specifically in reproductive medicine (helping women get pregnant). Other than helping infertile couples to conceive and assisting for high-risk pregnancy, Dr Somas can help urinary incontinence, menstrual disorders, uterine fibroids, PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome), menopause, vaginal infections, ovulation disorders, ovarian cysts, endometriosis and more. Dr. Somaskandar graduated as an obstetrician and gynaecologist (O&G) in 2002 from Universiti Malaya. At the same time, he keeps busy by teaching as a senior lecturer and examiner in Penang Medical College. He is good in his job as he is exposed to it since childhood as both his grandfather and father are doctors. So, you know you can put trust in him.
4. Dr. Narinder Singh Shadan
Dr. Narinder is the only doctor who does gentle-birth technique, especially water birth delivery. Penang Island Hospital where he is one of the resident OB, is the only hospital in Penang that has water-birth delivery facilities. He is very experienced in this newly recognised technique as he has a lot of foreign patients who prefer delivering baby in the water. It is said to be an easier baby delivery. He is very patient and caring. He is always there for the patient when they need him. He also gives his patients his personal number for them to contact him once the contractions start as it takes 3 hours to fill the birthing pool. He supports your choice and helps you to chooose the best choice. If you are planning to have a different style of birth delivery, you might want to set an appointment with him.
5. Dr. Voon Meng Hoon
She is an experienced obstetrician in Loh Guan Lye Hospital, Penang. She is a good gynae because she is said to be very gentle and explains thoroughly about all the concerns a pregnant mother has for pregnancy. As a mother of two herself, she is patient and caring. She understands what a mom-to-be is going through. Not only that, her husband Dr. Devindran is also a gynaecologist in the same hospital, but his consultation is more towards fertility treatments such as IVF for trying to conceive (TTC) couples. Her education for Medicine (M.B.B.S) in Glasgow and her post-graduation in London. Her fee is considered reasonable but she doesn’t do ultrasound. For that, you will have to go to another doctor. To meet her, you MUST make an appointment. She does not serve walk-in patients. Even with an appointment you are warned, you have to wait long. So, be prepared to wait long, but the wait is worth it.
6. Dr. Soon Su Seong
As an OBGYN in Penang Adventist Hospital (PAH), Dr. Soon is well experienced in both surgical and medical treatment of pregnancy and childbirth. Before working in PAH, he used to serve at the KK Women's and Children's Hospital, Singapore subspecialising in gynaecological oncology. He is very knowledgeable in gynaecological conditions and illnesses. He is fluent in English, Malay, Hokkien and Cantonese. He is very detailed and always updates his patients on their situations. He always calls them after getting back the patients test results to let them know as soon as possible. His service fee is considerably reasonable. You have to get to him with an appointment since his popular. His waiting line is very long so, you might want to go around the area while waiting for your turn. He is also very patient in letting you ask questions concerning the pregnancy.
7. Dr. Low Chin Soon
Dr. Low Chin Soon is an obstetrics based in Penang Adventist Hospital. He completed his M.B.B.S in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and obtained membership of Royal Colleges of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists as his specialisation. Dr. Low deals with most of the common pregnancy and childbirth related problems. He has special interest in minimal invasive surgery and fetal medicines and performs laparoscopic also known as Key-hole surgeries. Dr. Low is a member of the Obstetrical & Gynaecological Society of Malaysia and the Family Planning Association. He is fluent in English, Malay, Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese. He doesn’t let his patient spend on unnecessary items. He also let you make the decision on whether you want to do normal birth delivery or through c-sect. he will explain both pro’s and con’s on both type of delivery and the last decision is yours. He supports mothers who want to breastfeed their babies. Breastfeeding is the best way to keep your child strong.
