余云昶中医师解释，登革热 (Dengue Fewer)，断骨热，天狗热，是通过蚊子传播的四种不同却紧密相关的登革热病毒 (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, DENV-4)所引起的热带病，而人类和伊蚊 (雌性埃及伊蚊和白纹伊蚊)是登革热的主要传染源。登革热的感染过程分为四个时期:潜伏期，急性发热期，极期及恢复期。人类被伊蚊叮咬感染登革热后，在潜伏期末及急性发热期内具有传染性，传染性主要局限于发病前6至18小时，一直到发病后第3天，整个过程可长达12天左右。
