Dr Goh, who represented UKM vice-chancellor at the signing, said their first cochlear implant on a boy in 1997 resulted in their patient growing up to live a full and normal life. A cochlear implant is an electronic device that is surgically implanted in the inner ear and activated by a device outside the ear. The device bypasses damaged parts of the inner ear or cochlear and provides direct electrical stimulation to the hearing nerve. However, this does not "cure'' hearing loss.
