Our Society was established in collaboration with Hospital University, Hospital University Kebangsaan Malaysia & Hospital Kuala Lumpur. MS is an auto immune disease which effects the central nervous system which includes the brain & spinal cord .
MS effects vision, walking, bowel or bladder system etc. It is variable and it's very different in each patient. MS is not preventable or curable yet, it is not contagious. It's a rare illness in Asian countries, more common among the Caucasians.
Our main goals are to provide patients with a support network. To increase public awareness, to encourage earlier diagnosis & treatment, to seek government assistance in approving the availability of the medication as it can cost between RM.3,500 to RM.4500 a month.
It is estimated that 2.5 million individuals worldwide suffer from MS and there are about 1000 in Malaysia. One of the key problem is poor public awareness and at times the patients themselves do not come forward for treatment. This has also caused break up in the family and the patients suffer in silence.
In Europe & in the US, MS Societies have been instrumental in fostering increased awareness of the disease and unite family & friends.
