袁德和医生指出，大部分精神疾病的病因是无法解释的。精神疾病是多因素病，其中遗传是最大的因素（约50%）。举凡家族有精神病病史者，便带有精神疾病的潜在因子。含有潜在因子的人，大脑较为敏感，一旦经歷某些事件如感情创伤，便可能触使病发。 要测知自己是否遗传了家族精神疾病因子，非易事一桩。高达90%的精神疾病患者单从外表看不出来，再加上並非所有带因者都会病发，所以即使家族內没有祖辈明显患上精神疾病，也不表示自己不带因子。如此看来，精神疾病普遍存在於人群之中，更是我们应该正视的问题。
